Other small projects

Overview

On this page you can find a small collection of website designs, landign pages and other small digital projects that I have been working on

1. Arboreal landing page

Arboreal is a startup company that develops mobile apps for the forest industry. The company had two apps:

  • Arboreal Height - measures the height of trees using AR technology
  • Arboreal Forest - allow users to include samples from trees

My task was to design their landing page and create animations for the onboarding of the users for their second app. I felt a bit limited because the client required me to incorporate a specific image of a “splash” in the design. This is the final design:

2. Animations for Arboreal

At the time of our collaboration, Arboreal’s app for meaduring trees was still in development and testing phase. The app’s controls didn’t follow the natural way of measuring trees. Instead, users have to mark a starting point by tapping a button and then tap again to mark the end point.

I suggested to add short animations together with descriptive text during the onboarding to improve the user expeience of the app. This addition would help the users to understand how the app works.

This video shows 3 suggestions on how the gestures “tap” and “drag while still holding the button” could be animated.

Here’s a breakdown of the steps to measure a tree’s height:

  1. Approach the tree and mark it by pressing the button.
  2. Move a few steps away from the tree while keeping the phone upright.
  3. Point the camera down and mark the lowest visible point of the tree.
  4. Mark the top of the tree.

This is a screen recording of my phone, showing the animations, implemented in the app (and in 2024 they are still part of the onboarding as far as I know).

I also designed other animations for different parts of the app. For instance, after marking the first tree, a virtual circle is generated around it. If the user goes too far from the center of the circle (the tree), the app provides an alert to prevent any unintended errors.

Once all the trees are measured, and samples are taken, the user is prompted to press the ’next’ button to continue using the app.

Potential future improvements

Regarding animations, I’d opt for more efficient tools like the Rive app. It’s free, offers fantastic performance, and generates small-sized files that can be easily integrated into various digital products.

3. Umeå Wheels

Umeå Wheels is startup developing a platform for long-term renting second-hand bicycles in Umeå. Its aim is to reduce the abondended bikes around the city and to make it affordable and convenient for newly arrived students to find a bike.

My task: create a logo that represented the company’s focus on bikes

The initial name of the company was Umeå Bikes which had to be changed due to similarities of another company’s name operating in the same region. After the change (to Umeå Wheels), the logo’s bicycle icon remained to keep the brand’s message clear and consistent.

4. Umeå Wheels website

I started with sketches and low-fidelity prototypes to set a layout. After collaborating with the client and discussing the different sections and content, I created a fully-functional, high-fidelity prototype. The website incorporates the brand’s main colours and circular elements that convey movement and a sense of wheels in motion.

5. Web app concept for Umeå Wheels

As a future development of the company, I created a concept for a web app where all available bikes could be registered, together with other details and availability for renting. Students who come to Umeå could use the platform and book a bike for long-term rent.

Here’s a concept UI:

Another feature would be allowing citizens to register their own bikes and have a digital proof that a bike belongs to them. This could reduce the bike thefts which are a common problem in many cities.

This is how the user page could look like:
